ICES Laboratory Rules

  • You must be at least 18 years old and a George Mason University student in order to participate in our experiments. In order to be eligible for our experiments, you must be able to make real-time motor responses to visual cues from a computer interface.

  • The experiment will start at the time stated in the invitation email and doors will promptly close at start time. Any participant who shows up after the start time will not be eligible to receive the on-time payment and will be denied participation in the experiment. Make sure to arrive at least 10 to 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time.

  • If you receive an invitation email and wish to participate, you must RSVP (i.e. confirm) in order to be eligible to take part in the experiment. Confirmation is a commitment to show up on time and priority to participate will be given to those who have confirmed. Repeated absences to confirmed experiments may result in loss of priority to receive invitation emails in the future.

  • Any participant who has not confirmed for an experiment is not eligible to participate in the experiment.

  • By confirming for an experiment, you implicitly agree to be available for the experiment until the end time. You are also immediately entitled to a show-up fee, even if the experiment doesn’t run. If you leave in the middle of the experiment, you and all other participants will be dismissed by the researcher and will only be paid the show-up fee, also called an on-time payment. Make sure to be available until the scheduled end time.

  • You must bring your Mason ID in order to participate in experiments. By the discretion of the researcher in charge, anyone without a Mason ID may be denied participation in the experiment and the on-time bonus.

  • Do not knock on the door once the scheduled start time has passed as you will interrupt the experiment.

  • During an experiment, each participant is expected to follow the researcher’s instructions and to focus on the research tasks.

  • You may choose to no longer receive invitations for experiments at anytime by unsubscribing. Log into your account, go to “My Account” and click “Unsubscribe” at the bottom.

By the discretion of the researcher in charge, rule violators may be asked to leave the experiment without payment.
